I was 8 Years Old. My First Holy Communion.
I had taken all the classes. Learned to recite all the prayers. Practiced all the walks in the church.
Learned to kneel when the Head Nun clicked her Metal Cricket.
I was Ready. My Mom was Not.
She Worried about Finding the Dress. Girls had to dress all in White. Dress. Shoes. Gloves. Veil.
There was only one tiny shop in town that sold First Communion Dresses.
The shop owners were tired and crabby.
The Dresses were wrapped in thick yellowed plastic. Trying on the dresses was frowned upon.
Certainly No Twirling. No Spinning. No Dancing.
Serious Business. And What if we couldn’t find the Perfect Dress?
We Did, of Course. It was Beautiful. But the Communion Dress was Not My Worry.
My Worry was Breakfast.
The Nuns were very clear that there was to be No Eating before we receive Communion.
Nothing. Except for sips of Water.
Breakfast was my Life. Cereal. Waffles. French Toast.
And Eating Early. Like at 6:00.
First Holy Communion Mass was at 10:00.
Yes, I was worried. I certainly couldn’t cheat. My dad told me a small piece of toast would be fine.
I didn’t dare.
And So There I was in that Massive Church in the Loveliest Dress.
Just Like a Princess.
The scent of incense was heavy in the air. The choir was singing. Friends and Family were Watching.
As I Walked Up the Aisle the Pews began to Sway. The Walls got Wavy.
The Cricket Clicks drifted softly away.
Then I felt a Strong Hand grab my Elbow. I was gently guided to the Altar.
From behind the black veil, the nun smiled at me. I Made it.
