Nothing like starting a blog with an international event that lands (literally) in our backyard…The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta!
The first week in October, Albuquerque fills to overflowing with visitors from all corners of the globe and the balloons fly, oh wow, do they fly. A truly magical event that lasts for 10 days. Magic is everywhere! The first Saturday morning in October is Mass Ascension – up and out the door by 4:30 a.m. is daunting, if not crazy, but well worth the effort. Cold dark early morning meets people huddled together sipping hot coffee, eating crazy huge breakfast burritos, sugary donuts and waiting. The sun peeks over the Sandia Mountains to our east, lighting the azure sky, and with a whoosh of propane the balloons grow as tall as skyscrapers, free themselves from their rope restraints, and lift gently and silently off the field. And everyone, young and old, looks up! Oh, there is one downside…driving…please remember that everyone is looking UP!
