“Remember, remember the fifth of November, Gunpowder treason and plot. We see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot! Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent to blow up King and Parliament. Three score barrels were laid below to prove old England’s overthrow. By God’s mercy he was catch’d with a darkened lantern and burning match. So, holler boys, holler boys, Let the bells ring. Holler boys, holler boys, God save the King. And what shall we do with him? Burn him!!
A (very) short history lesson – On November 5, 1605, Guy Fawkes was a member of the Gunpowder Plot…a group in England plotting to kill King James I and overthrow the government. In the late afternoon, the plotters hid explosives in the basement of Parliament and chose Guy Fawkes to guard the stash overnight. The plan was to set the place ablaze in the morning during the opening of Parliament. But…guards discovered Fawkes asleep by the pile of explosives and he was promptly arrested. King James I and Parliament were spared. All of London celebrated with lit bonfires…Hooray!
Meet our Guy Fawkes…a goofy, American version.
Okay, so, our version is more an Italian-American-British celebration – actually quite International…Eat hearty, my fellows, and Remember, Remember, the 5th of November. MAGICAL!
