Luminarias – tiny candles in sand-filled paper bags.
A New Mexico Tradition. Used Only for Christmas Eve.
The tiny lights line walkways, walls and roofs. The lights burn until the wee hours of Christmas Morning.
Their flickering glow is magical.
The history of luminarias begins with Spanish Merchants traveling through China. They were enamored with the Chinese Paper Lanterns and wanted to make their own version when they returned to New Spain.
Decorating with Paper Bags, Sand and a Candle doesn’t sound like much…But Oh, the Magic!
How to Make Authentic New Mexico Luminarias:
What You Need:
Candles.
Paper Lunch Bags.
Sand.
First – Fold Down the Top of the Bag to Make a 2″ Cuff.
Add a 1/2″ Layer of Sand to the Bottom of the Bag to weigh down the bag.
Carefully set out the Bags and Place a Candle in the Center of each one.
Light each Candle.
As Darkness Falls, the Tiny Bags begin to Glow.
