When Can I Have a Play Date, Mom???
I’m an Old(er) Mom of Young Kids.
Play Dates are a New Concept for Me.
I was a Kid in the 60’s. Living Blissfully in Suburban Long Island. On any Summer Morning, I’d be Up with the Birds. Eat Fruit Loops Cereal. Pop on a Bathing Suit, Shorts and Fly Out the Side Door to Explore the World. My Dearest Friend and Sidekick lived around the Corner. We’d Ride Everywhere Together. To the Library or to Swim in Each Other’s Backyard Pools. It was Just Us, Our Bikes and the Open Road.
One of Our Favorite Adventures was to Pack a Lunch and Ride Over to an Old Graveyard.
It was Forgotten and Overgrown. Never seen by passing cars, but from the seat of a bike, it was easy to spot. We’d park our bikes, carefully open the creaky gate and step into the shade of the Old Oaks. We’d read all the Headstones. Dates were Pre-Revolutionary War. Early 1700’s. Lots of Names like Josiah and Abigail were etched in the Stones. With Peanut Butter sandwiches in Hand, We’d try to figure out how old the person was when they died. We were shaken by the tiny Babies that had died and we felt the sadness of the Parents from so, so long ago.
My dear Friend went on to a 40-Plus Year Career as a Neonatal Nurse. Saving Babies. Spreading Joy and Love. 🙂
Friends and Friendship.
Not So Very Different Today. Except Today for Young Kids, there are Play Dates.
Play Dates May Not Be the “Free to Fly Like the Wind Kind” of Play…
But the End Result is the Same.
Laughing and Learning About Ourselves, Each Other and Our World.
