In My Own Backyard
Pitch Black. Crack of Dawn. We’re Up.
Shiver into Down and Cowboy Boots.
Makeshift Signs direct Balloonists to the Field.
There’s Grass. It’s Clammy, but so much better than Dirt.
Green Chile Burritos waft over the field. Quick sips of Hot Pinon Coffee.
Unfurling Silks with Miles of Rope is Task One.
Ceremonially Lighting the Propane is Next.
WHOOSH. Crackling Heat sears icy air. Balloons fill with deep breathes.
Hot Air Rises. Elementary Science. A Fact We Stake Our lives On.
Slivers of Sunlight crest the Sandias.
The Box is Working. No Wind. Just Azure Blue Sky.
Oh Look, Wave to Mom. We’ll be Home Soon!

A short 100 word tale of a massive international event that happens in my neighborhood. Almost literally in my backyard. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. A 10-day event. Mass Ascension brings together 850 Balloons that lift off on the First Saturday Morning in October. Balloonists from all over the World come here to fly. To be on the field and sharing in the moment is inspiring. Perfect weather conditions make for safe, beautiful flying, whether viewed from aloft or safely on the ground. But beware, driving in town can be precarious…everyone is focused on looking up!
Will this Year’s 2020 Fiesta happen?
Maybe with a Bit of Hope and Magic.
