A CHRISTMAS TREE STORY

It was Exactly One Week to Christmas. 1957. My Sister Holly’s Birthday. Mom is in the hospital and it’s Dad-In-Charge.

Dad and I find a Balsam Fir in a Christmas Tree Lot and hurry home. He wrestles with the Lights and the Paper Angel Tree Topper. I love all the glittery glass ornaments. This year Christmas decorating is rushed…Dad has to dash off to the hospital to visit Mom and the new baby. I will be shuffled off to a neighbor. No Kids are allowed in the Hospital in the 1950s.

Everything is Ready…Wreath on the Door. Wooden Reindeer and Snowman Family Stand at Attention on the Front Lawn. Santa Mugs Stacked on the Counter. Christmas Tree Decorated. Lights Twinkling.

Dad is in the tiny bathroom shaving. The bathroom is steamy hot. I’m in the living room admiring the Tree. I drag the stepstool over to the Tree and gingerly climb up to hang the last ornament. On tippy-toes I reach up, when suddenly, the stool wobbles…I try to balance and grab tightly to the Tree Branches. I’m lifted up into the air and come down hard on the floor with the Tree on Top of Me. Crying. The dog tries to pull me out from under the branches.

Right on Cue, the Bathroom door flings open. Big billows of Steam and Shaving Cream fly everywhere.

Wide-Eyed with Fear, Dad to the Rescue. He is sure I’m hurt.

“I’m sorry…I broke the Tree.”

He could only chuckle with relief. So many years later, it’s one of my favorite Christmas Stories to Tell.
